Exposure management has reached near-universal adoption, yet most programs aren’t delivering results. The SANS 2026 Exposure Management Survey, sponsored by Dataminr, reveals a critical gap: 91% of organizations have implemented some form of exposure management, but only 7% run it continuously, and just 15% report significant risk reduction over the past year. The findings point to a chain of failure rooted in fragmented visibility, scattered data, and organizational coordination breakdowns. Nearly half of respondents (44%) pull exposure findings from six or more disconnected systems, while 48% cite unmanaged or unknown assets as a top visibility gap. Remediation stalls not for lack of tools, but because ownership is unclear—44% say responsibility is spread across multiple teams.Authored by SANS Principal Instructor Jonathan Risto, this report maps the structural roots of the adoption-effectiveness gap and identifies three priorities for closing it: fixing ownership first, consolidating before automating, and measuring outcomes not just adoption.
